You have a degree from another university or university of applied sciences and want to study a master programme without entrance examnination at the University of Vienna?

Apply for admission early via u:space and complete your admission personally in the Admission Office within the deadline.

  • Your at least three year post-secondary degree has to be closely related to the master programme you intend to study at the University of Vienna.
  • At the University of Vienna, non-EU/EEA citizens with a bachelor degree from a non-EU/EEA country may only study the same degree programme which they are allowed to study in the country that issued their degree (= the special university entrance qualification, "admission statement").
  • Due to the processing time for your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing time for your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you might not be able to finish your admission for the semester you applied for.

Your steps in the admission procedure

Step 1: Preparation of the required documents

Scan all required documents (in high resolution) and create PDF files. All pages of one document as well as its legalisation and/or translation have to be merged into one single PDF file by means of an online tool of your choice (i.e. bachelor certificate + legalisation + translation, special entrance qualification for university studies + translation, etc.). All your files have to be easily readable and in high quality.

Step 2: Application for admission via u:space

Register during the application period in u:space and activate your u:account. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space, select the degree programme of your choice and upload the required documents as separate PDF files. Then click on "submit application".

The Admission Office can only process your application if the status is "submitted".

If you don't have any proof of German proficiency of level B2 yet, it will be prescribed in your admission letter that you have to take the supplementary German exam before you can begin your degree programme. You can pass this exam at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (deadlines, fees, partner institutes).

Step 3: Wait for the admission letter

The University of Vienna needs at least 12 weeks to process your application. Due to organisational reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

The Admission Office will contact you via e-mail to the address you provided in u:space.

Step 4: Personal admission

With your admission letter, you get information about your further steps in the admission procedure and information on whether you have to take the supplementary examination German at the VWU (cooperation partners, costs, deadlines) before your can start your degree programme.

The admission may be either

  • without stipulations,
  • with stipulations of additional exams (up to a maximum of 30 ECTS) from the bachelor programme which you have to pass during your master programme or
  • rejected due to missing equivalence.

You will be notified about possible stipulations in the admission letter. A seperate admission to a bachelor/master programme to participate in the required courses is not necessary. They should be passed at the begining of the degree programme!

As your identity has to be verified, you have to complete the admission procedure personally at the Admission Office. Representation by third parties is not possible!

Step 5: Payment of the tuition fee/students' union fee

You may pay with your ATM card (Maestro card) when completing the admission procedure at the Admission Office.

You are admitted as soon as the prescribed tuition fee/students' union fee is registered as paid.

What comes next?

Order your student ID in u:space > Personal Matters > My u:card. As soon as the prescribed fee is registered as paid in u:space > Financial Matters > Tuition fee/students' union fee you can validate your u:card.

Furthermore you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) in u:space > Personal Matters > My Documents.

As a non-degree student (while participating in the Preparation Programme - VWU) you may only attend courses and pass exams at the VWU. This means you cannot start with your degree programme yet.

Once you are enrolled as a degree student, you can plan your semester and register for courses. The respective course registration periods can be found in u:find and u:space.
