Admission to doctoral/PhD degree programmes with a degree from the University of Vienna

You have finished your diploma or master degree programme at the University of Vienna and want to continue with a doctoral/PhD programme?

The application process depends on whether you apply for a doctoral/PhD programme in the same field or not.

"In the same field" or not?

"In the same field" means that you continue your studies in the same field you completed your master degree in, i.e., after finishing your master programme in Political Sciences you apply for a doctoral programme in Political Sciences.

"In a different field" means that i.e. after finishing your master programme in Chemistry you apply for a doctoral programme in Pharmacy.

Information on whether or not your degree is in the same field of your doctoral programme can be found in the curriculum of the respective doctoral/PhD programme.

Any missing or formally incorrect document will prolong the processing time and lead to a later admission. Only submit your application once you uploaded all required documents.

Step 2: Waiting for your admission letter

The Admission Office needs at least 12 weeks to process your application. Due to administrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

Your admission letter will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space.

Step 3: Personal admission

The admission may be either

  • without stipulations,
  • with stipulations of additional exams (up to a maximum of 60 ECTS) from the bachelor or master programme which you have to pass during your doctoral/PhD programme or
  • rejected due to missing equivalence.

You will be notified about possible stipulations in the admission letter. A seperate admission to a bachelor/master programme to participate in the required courses is not necessary. They should be passed at the begining of the degree programme!

As the last step in the admission procedure you have to present your admission letter and your student ID in the Admission Office (opening hours).
