Admission to master degree programmes with a degree from another university

You have a degree from another university and want to study a master degree programme at the University of Vienna?

If it s a master degree without an entrance examination: Apply for admission early via u:space and complete your admission personally in the Admission Office during the admission period.

Please note

  • Non-EU/EEA citizens with a bachelor degree from a non-EU/EEA country may only study a degree programme at the University of Vienna, which they also have the right to study in the country that issued their degree (= Special Qualification for University Studies).
  • An application for admission is without exception not possible after the deadline.
  • Due to the duration of processing your application for admission and (if needed) application for visa at the Austrian embassy or consulate, it is possible that you may only complete the admission process in the semester after your application.
  • The admission letter does not expire and is valid indefinitely,but it is subject to change of legal requirements (p.e. the introduction of an entrance examination for the degree programme of your choice)

 Required Documents

You require as seperate JPEG- or PNG-files:

  • your passport or personal ID
  • a passport photograph for the student ID (has to fulfil EU-norm requirements)

You require as seperate PDF-files:

  • your diploma with legalisation required for the issuing country
  • your diploma supplement/transcripts
  • Special Qualification for University Studies (only for non-EU/EEA citizens)
  • a translation of above mentioned documents by a court sworn translator, if your documents were not issued in English or German
  • proof of your proficiency of German and - if the degree programme requires it -  English and any further necessary requirements as per curriculum of the degree programme of your choice.

 Deadlines for Application and Admission

Deadlines depend on your citizenship and whether you have to participate in a German preparation course.

Steps of the Admission Process


Step 1: Preparation of the required documents

Scan all required documents in high resolution. If your documents comprise multiple pages, merge them into one PDF-file per document with the online tool of your choice (e.g. bachelor degree and translation). Check the quality and readability of your documents before uploading them.


Step 2: Application for admission via u:space

Register during the general admission period in u:space and activate your u:account. This account is required throughout your further studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space and select the degree programme of your choice, upload all required documents and click the button "Submit Application". The status of your application has to be "submitted". This status will not change.


Step 3: Wait for your admission letter

The University of Vienna needs several weeks to process your application. Due to organisational reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application while it is being processed.

The Admission Office will contact you via e-mail to the address you provided in u:space.

If you have not got proficiency in German of at least level B2 yet, you will receive a conditional admission letter which will state that you have to do the additional exam in German before you can begin your degree programme. You can participate in this exam at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (deadlines, fees, partner-institutes).


Step 4: Personal admission

Your admission letter may either be

  • unconditional,
  • conditional with additional exams from the respective bachelor degree programme, which you have to pass during your master degree programme (max. 30 ECTS) or
  • rejected due to missing equivalence.

Information about possible conditions will be found on your admission letter. A separate admission to a bachelor degree programme to participate in required courses is not necessary. The additional exams prescribed in admission letter should be passed at the beginning of your master degree programme.

You have to present all required documents (original or notarised copy), passport and one photograph and your admission letter until the end of the extended admission period to the Admission Office. You have to do this in person as your identity has to be verified during this step. No representation by third parties is possible.
Bear in mind that the semester starts long before the extended admission period ends!




What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as paid, you can print your student documents (i.e. the student record and confirmation of enrolment) in u:space > Personal Matters > My Documents.

After the admission you can plan your semester and register for courses during their registration period. These registration periods can be found in u:find and u:space.
