Admission to bachelor/diploma degree programmes with proficiency in German

Your secondary school leaving certificate and your citizenship are from a non-EU/EEA country? You want to study a bachelor or diploma degree programme without an entrance examination and you have sufficient knowledge of German of at least level B2?

You apply for admission online via u:space during the general admission period, wait for the admission letter and then complete your admission personally in the Admission Office.

Please note:

  • at the University of Vienna you may only study the same subject as you are allowed to study in the country where you finished secondary school/a degree programme (= Special University Entrance Qualification, "Admission Statement").
  • An application for admission after the deadline is - without exception - impossible.
  • Due to the length of processing your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing of your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you may only be able to finish your admission in the semester after you applied.
  • The admission letter does not expire and is valid indefinitly. It is, however, subject to changes in legal conditions (p.e. the introduction of entrance examinations for your chosen degree programme).

 Required Documents

You need as seperate JPEG or PNG files:

  • Your passport or personal ID card (if applicable: documents about a change of name)
  • Passport photograph for the student ID card (has to meet EU norm requirements)

Note the early registration deadlines for the preparation programme of the Viennese universities (VWU). If you have to participate in the preparation programme, you first register there and then have to complete the admission to the University of Vienna in the general admission period.



Steps of the Admission Process


Step 1: Preparation of Required Documents

Scan all required documents (in high resolution) and create files in the respective format. Use the online tool of your choice to merge all pages of a document into a single pdf file (e.g. secondary school leaving certificate with legalisation and translation; special entrance qualification for university studies plus translation; transcript with legalisation and translation; etc). Check the qualitiy of your files before uploading them.

Step 2: Application for Admission via u:space

Register in u:space during the general admission period and activate your u:account. This account is required during all your further studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space, select the degree programme of your choice and upload the required documents as individual pdf-files. As you do not have proof of proficiency in German yet, you can leave this field blank. At last press the button "Submit Application."

As soon as the status of your application in u:space is "submitted" you can continue to the next step. The status of your application can be found in u:space below "My applications."

The processing of your application takes several weeks. Missing documents prolong the processing of your applicatio, so try to submit the complete set of document!

Step 3: Wait for your Admission Letter

Due to adminsitrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application during processing.

You will receive your admission letter via e-mail to the address you provided in u:space.

Step 4: Personal Admission

With your admission letter, you get information whether you have to do any supplementary examinations (mathematics, English or history/geography) in the Preparation Programme of the Viennese Universites (VWU) before your can begin your degree programme (costs, deadlines, partner institutes). If this is the case for you, you will receive instructions on how to proceed with your admission letter.

If you receive an unconditional admission letter, you have to go to the Admission Office and present the required documents (either orignals or notarized copies).

You have to do this step in person, as your identity has to be verified. Representation by third parties is not possible!

As soon as your Students' Union Fee is registered as paid, you are enrolled at the University of Vienna.

What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as paid, you can print your student documents (i.e. the student record and confirmation of enrolment) in u:space > Personal Matters > My Documents

If you are enrolled as a non-degree student (= participation in the preparation programme), you must not begin your degree programme yet and may only do the prescribed examinations at the VWU.

Once you are enrolled as a degree student, you can plan your semester and register for courses during their registration period. Theses registration periods can be found in u:space and in u:find.
