Application with a school leaving certificate and citizenship from a non-EU/EEA country and proficiency in German

 

Your school leaving certificate and your citizenship are from a non-EU/EEA country, you have knowledge of German at B2 level or higher and want to study a bachelor programme with entrance examination?

Please note:

  • Apply for admission only when you have all required documents ready. The scans of your documents have to be in high quality (readability!).
  • At the University of Vienna you may only study the same degree programme that you are allowed to study in the country where you finished secondary school/a degree programme (= special entrance qualification, "admission statement").
  • Due to the processing time of your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing time for your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you might not be able to finish the admission procedure for the semester you applied for.
  • The admission letter does not expire, but remains permanently valid. It is, however, subject to changes in legal conditions (i.e. the introduction of an entrance examination for the degree programme of your choice).

  • other programmes with entrance examination: after the announcement of the results until 30 November 2018

  • only if you participated successfully in the entrance examination 2018: 7 January until 5 February 2019

Your steps in the admission procedure

 

Step 1: Preparation of required documents

Scan all required documents (in high resolution) and create PDF files. Your secondary school leaving certificate and its translation have to be merged into one single PDF file by means of an online tool of your choice. All your files have to be easily readable. Please check the quality of your files before uploading them!

 

Step 2: Registration and application for admission to a degree programme

Register in u:space during the application period and activate your u:account. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space and upload each of the required documents as one single pdf-file.

If you do not have a diploma to prove your proficiency in German at B2 level you should enter the date when you are going to have it in the section „German proficiency“ and do not upload a document there. Please read the info about proficiency in German carefully and decide accordingly what to do.

Then click "Pay and submit". Pay the examination fee of Euro 50 via credit card or eps online payment (only possible if you have an Austrian bank account).

As soon as the status of your application is “submitted” in u:space under "My applications" the application has reached the University of Vienna and you are registered to participate in the entrance examination. This status does not change anymore!

You will receive a confirmation of registration via e-mail. You will receive further information necessary for the entrance examination at the e-mail address saved in your u:space registration. Please check the spam folder of your mailbox frequently and add the e-mail address of the University of Vienna to your address book, so you do not miss any important information.

 

Step 3: Wait for the admission letter

Do the remaining steps of the entrance procedure and wait for the acceptance letter (will be sent by e-mail).

The participation in the entrance examination is possible without the positive admission letter. You will receive it only if your application is complete.

Any missing or formally incorrect document will prolong the processing time and lead to a later admission. Only submit your application once you uploaded all required documents.

The Admission Office needs at least several weeks to process your application. Due to administrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

Your admission letter will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space.

 

Step 4: Personal enrolment to the degree programme

A few days after the entrance exam you will be notified by e-mail whether you were successful in the exam.

Without exception the admission is possible only if you participated successfully in the entrance examination and also fulfil the general admission requirements for a bachelor programme at the University of Vienna. 

 

Option 1:

In the acceptance letter you will find prescribed the supplementary examination (English, Mathematics, Geography or History).

Please follow the instructions you receive in the e-mail that accompanies the acceptance letter. Register for the University Preparation Programme Vienna (VWU) in the specified registration period (costs, registration periods, partner institutions).

Then you go to the Admission Office (opening hours) with the required documents in original and the confirmation you received at VWU. There you will be admitted as a non-degree student (for attending the Preparation Programme) as soon as you have paid the obligatory students’ union fee. 

In this status you may only take the examinations at VWU, examinations for the degree programme cannot be taken yet.

You have to complete all prescribed supplementary examinations and the personal enrolment until 5 February in the following year. If you do not finish the Preparation Programme in time, you have to re-take the entrance examination in the following academic year. 

 

Option 2:

You were successful in the entrance examination and no supplementary examinations are prescribed in your acceptance letter. 

Please go to the Admission Office (opening hours) during the admission period of your degree programme. Bring the above listed documents in original or notarized copy. 

As your identity has to be verified, you have to complete the admission procedure personally at the Admission Office. Representation by third parties is not possible!

Step 5: Payment of the tuition fee/students' union fee

You may pay with your ATM card (Maestro card) when completing the admission procedure at the Admission Office.

You are admitted as soon as the prescribed tuition fee/students' union fee is registered as paid.

 

What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as paid in u:space (Financial Matters > Tuition fee/students' union fee), you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) by clicking on Personal Matters > My Documents. You can also validate your student ID, the u:card.

As a non-degree student (while participating in the Preparation Programme - VWU) you may only attend courses and pass exams at the VWU. This means you cannot start with your degree programme yet.
