The master’s programme in History of Art and Architecture aims at expanding and complementing students’ knowledge of history and their analytic and interpretative competences in the area of history of art and architecture. The programme focuses on an independent investigation of selected specialisations in the research areas at the Department of History of Art. These include: Medieval history of art and architecture (late antiquity/Middle Ages), early modern history of art and architecture (early modern era), modern history of art and architecture (modern and contemporary art), Central European history of art and architecture, Byzantine history of art and architecture, and non-European history of art and architecture. Based on this broad foundation (which our Department in Vienna is renowned for), students have the opportunity to specialise in a wide range of subject areas.

Study Programme

The master’s programme in History of Art and Architecture equips students with analytic and interpretative competences in dealing with visual media. Moreover, they acquire the ability to apply the methods of the discipline in a reflective manner and independently conduct academic research and form an academic opinion. One of the special characteristics of this master’s programme at the University of Vienna is its broad geographic and cultural coverage. Thus, students have the opportunity to specialise in individual subject areas and explore art and architecture on the basis of originals. In addition, students can complement the master’s programme by adding an interdisciplinary module (15 ECTS credits).
