French (Teaching Subject)

The subject French focuses on a solid linguistic education and aims at equipping students with basic subject-related academic and didactic knowledge, as well as relevant practical competences in French. In the area of linguistics, this includes knowledge of language systems, text linguistics, sociolinguistics, variational linguistics and pragmalinguistics. Courses in the area of regional studies focus on country-specific knowledge, such as knowledge of society, politics, economy, history and geography of the linguistic and cultural area selected, from a problem-oriented perspective. Competences that students should develop in the area of literature and media studies include the ability to analyse the aesthetics and culture of French forms of expression in literature and media. The programme aims at imparting subject-specific didactic competences in the area of language teaching and language acquisition. In addition, students acquire excellent practical French language competence required for teaching French at schools.

To reach this high level of language proficiency, students need to demonstrate language proficiency in French equivalent to level B1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) when they start their studies. In addition, students have to successfully complete the supplementary examination in Latin by the end of the degree programme.

General Information about the Teacher Education Programme

The teacher education programme for secondary school teachers (of general education) consists of a bachelor’s programme (8 semesters/240 ECTS credits) and a master’s programme (4 semesters/120 ECTS credits).

Students select two teaching subjects according to their interests and acquire subject-related academic and didactic knowledge. In addition, they have to complete courses on General Educational Fundamentals and Studies on Teaching.

Students who would like to study a third teaching subject, can do so by completing an extension curriculum.

Please note that the instruction language of this programme is German. To start the degree programme, you need to hold a certificate of German proficiency on C1 level.
