Admission to a master programme with a certificate from another university

You have a degree from another university or university of applied sciences and want to study a master degree programme without entrance examnination at the University of Vienna?

Apply for admission early via u:space and complete your admission personally in the Admission Office during the admission period.

Please note

  • At the University of Vienna, non-EU/EEA citizens with a bachelor degree from a non-EU/EEA country may only study the same degree programme which they are allowed to study in the country that issued their degree (= the special university entrance qualification - "admission statement").
  • It is impossible to apply for admission after the deadline. No exceptions are granted!
  • Due to the processing time for your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing time for your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you might not be able to finish your admission for the semester you applied for.
  • The admission letter does not expire, but remains permanently valid. It is, however, subject to changes in legal conditions (i.e. the introduction of an entrance examination for the degree programme of your choice).

 Required documents

You need the following documents as seperate JPEG or PNG files:

  • Your passport or personal ID
  • A passport photograph for your student ID card

Additionally, you need the following documents as PDF files:

 Application and admission deadlines

The deadlines depend on your citizenship and on whether or not you have to participate in a German preparation course.

Your steps in the admission procedure

Step 1: Preparation of the required documents

Scan all required documents (in high resolution) and create separate PDF files. If your documents (i.e. your bachelor certificate and translation) comprise various pages, merge them into one single PDF file by means of an online tool of your choice. All your files have to be easily readable. Please check the quality of your files before uploading them!

Step 2: Application for admission via u:space

Register during the general admission period in u:space and activate your u:account. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space, select the degree programme of your choice and upload the required documents as separate PDF files. Then click on "submit application".

The Admission Office can only process your application if the status is "submitted".

Step 3: Wait for your admission letter

The University of Vienna needs at least 12 weeks to process your application. Due to organisational reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

The Admission Office will contact you via e-mail to the address you provided in u:space.

If you don't have any proof of German proficiency of level B2 yet, it will be prescribed in your admission letter that you have to take the supplementary German exam before you can begin your degree programme. You can pass this exam at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (deadlines, fees, partner-institutes).

Step 4: Personal admission

Your admission letter may either be

  • unconditional,
  • conditional with additional exams from the respective bachelor degree programme, which you have to pass during your master degree programme (max. 30 ECTS) or
  • rejected due to missing equivalence.

You will find information about possible conditions in your admission letter. A separate admission to a bachelor programme to participate in required courses is not necessary. The additional exams prescribed in the admission letter should be passed at the beginning of your master degree programme.

You have to present all required documents in their original version or as notarised copies as well as your passport, a photograph and your admission letter until the end of the admission period at the Admission Office. You have to do this in person as your identity has to be verified. Representation by third parties is not possible!

What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as paid in u:space (Financial Matters > Tuition Fee/Students' Union Fee), you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) by clicking on Personal Matters > My Documents.

After the admission you can plan your semester and register for courses during their registration period. These registration periods can be found in u:find and u:space.
