Admission to a bachelor/diploma programme without sufficient proficiency in German


Your secondary school leaving certificate and your citizenship is from a non-EU/EEA country? You want to study a bachelor or diploma programme without an entrance examination but you don't have German proficiency on B2 level yet?

Apply for admission online via u:space during the application period, wait for the admission letter and complete your admission personally in the Admission Office.

Please note:

  • Prepare your documents before the application period starts. Apply for admission only when you have all required documents ready. The scans of your documents have to be in high quality (readability!)
  • At the University of Vienna you may only study the same degree programme that you are allowed to study in the country where you finished secondary school/a degree programme (= special entrance qualification, "admission statement").
  • Due to the processing time of your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing time for your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you might not be able to finish your admission for the semester you applied for.

  • Your passport or personal ID card
  • Passport photograph

Summer semester 2018:

  • application period: from 2 January to 5 February 2018
  • admission period: from 8 January to 30 April 2018

Winter semester 2018/19:

  • application period: from 2 July to 5 September 2018
  • admission period: from 2 July to 30 November 2018

 University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities

Please note the early registration deadlines for the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU). If you have to participate in the Preparation Programme, you first register there and then complete the admission procedure at the University of Vienna within the application period.



Your steps in the admission procedure




Step 1: Preparation of required documents

Scan all required documents (in high resolution) and create PDF files. All pages of one document as well as its legalisation and/or translation have to be merged into one single PDF file by means of an online tool of your choice (i.e. school leaving certificate + legalisation + translation, special entrance qualification for university studies + translation, etc.). All your files have to be easily readable and in high quality.


Step 2: Application for admission via u:space

Register in u:space during the application period and activate your u:account. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.

Log in to u:space, select the degree programme of your choice and upload the required documents as separate files. Do not upload a "Certificate of proficiency in German at level B2" under "Other documents and proofs". Then click on "submit application."

The Admission Office can only process your application if the status is "submitted". Any missing or formally incorrect document will prolong the processing time and lead to a later admission. Only submit your application once you uploaded all required documents.

Step 3: Wait for the admission letter

The Admission Office needs at least 12 weeks to process your application. Due to administrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

Your admission letter will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space.


Step 4: Registration for the Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU)

With your admission letter you will get information about your further steps in the admission procedure and information on whether you have to take any supplementary examinations (Mathematics, English or History/Geography) beside German at the VWU (cooperation partners, costs, deadlines) before your can start your degree programme. 


Step 5: Personal admission

After registering at the VWU, go to the Admission Office (opening hours) and present the registration confirmation and the required documents in original or as notarised copies during the application period in order to complete the admission procedure.

As your identity has to be verified, you have to complete the admission procedure personally.


Step 6: Payment of the students´union fee

You may pay with your ATM card (Maestro card) when completing the admission procedure at the Admission Office.

You will be admitted as a non-degree student as soon as the prescribed fee is registered as paid in u:space. This means that you cannot start with your degree programme yet, you can only participate in courses and exams at the VWU.

What comes next?

Order your student ID in u:space > Personal Matters > My u:card. As soon as the prescribed fee is registered as paid in u:space > Financial Matters > Tuition fee/students' union fee you can validate your u:card.

Furthermore you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) in u:space > Personal Matters > My Documents.
