Application with a secondary-school leaving certificate and citizenship from a non-EU/EEA country and proficiency in German

Your secondary-school leaving certificate and your citizenship are from a non-EU/EEA country, you have knowledge of German at level B2 or higher and want to study a bachelor/diploma programme with an entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment?

When completing the personal enrolment for the degree programme proof of German proficiency at C1 level (or higher) is required.

Please note:

  • Apply for admission only when you have all required documents ready. The scans of your documents have to be in high quality (readability!).
  • At the University of Vienna you may only study the same degree programme that you are allowed to study in the country where you finished secondary school/a degree programme (= special university entrance qualification, "admission statement").
  • Due to the processing time of your application for admission at the University of Vienna and the processing time for your visa application at the Austrian embassy or consulate, you might not be able to finish the admission procedure for the semester you applied for. Please ask at the Austrian embassy or consulate about your visa options in order to particpate in the written entrance exam.

Schedule of the academic year

Your steps in the admission procedure

Step 1: Online Self-Assessment

As a first step in the entrance exam procedure, complete the Online Self-Assessment within the registration period. After completion, you will receive your OSA code. If you have it sent to you via e-mail, this code will be centrally stored.

There is no OSA for the bachelor programmes Psychology and Sport Science.

Step 2: Preparation of required documents

Prepare all required documents in an adequate format before the registration period starts. Scan the documents and create PDF files. Use an online tool of your choice to merge various pages of one document into one PDF file (f.e. secondary-school leaving certificate + legalisation + translation; special university entrance qualification + translation). All your files have to be easily readable. Please check the quality of your files before uploading them.

Step 3: Application for admission in u:space

  1. Activate your u:account in u:space within the registration period. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.
  2. Log in to u:space, complete the registration and select the degree programme of your choice. Upload the required documents. Select "Yes, my German knowledge is sufficient. I want to participate in the entrance exam procedure for the academic year 2019/20".
  3. Enter the OSA code.
  4. Select "continue to submission", check if the data you provided (especially your e-mail address) is correct and then click on "pay and submit application". Pay the examination fee of 50 Euro via credit card or eps online payment (only possible if you have an Austrian bank account).

You are registered for the entrance exam procedure as soon as the status of your application is "submitted". The Admission Office will then process your application. Missing documents will cause a delay in processing! Therefore, submit your application only after you have uploaded all required documents.

A confirmation of registration will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space. You will be informed about the entrance exam procedure on a regular basis. Check the spam folder of your mailbox frequently and add the e-mail address of the University of Vienna to your address book, so you do not miss any important information.

Step 4: Wait for your admission letter and the entrance exam procedure

Continue with the remaining steps of the entrance exam procedure and wait for your admission letter.

A participation in the entrance exam procedure is possible without the admission letter, which can only be issued if you have uploaded all required documents.

The Admission Office needs various weeks to process your application. For administrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

Your admission letter will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space.

Step 5: Personal enrolment to the degree programme

A few weeks after the written entrance exam/aptitude test you will be notified by e-mail whether you were successful in the exam.

Without exception admission is only possible if you successfully participated in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment and also fulfil the general admission requirements for a bachelor/diploma programme at the University of Vienna.

If you successfully participated in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment but received a negative admission letter or if you received a positive admission letter but were not successful in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment, the admission to the degree programme is not possible.

Option 1:

In the acceptance letter you will find prescribed supplementary examinations (English, Mathematics, Geography or History).

Please follow the instructions you receive in the e-mail that accompanies the acceptance letter. Register for the University Preparation Programme Vienna (VWU) in the specified registration period (costs, registration periods, partner institutions).

Then go to the Admission Office (opening hours) with the required documents in their orignal version or as notarised copies and the confirmation you received at the VWU. There you will be admitted as a non-degree student (for attending the Preparation Programme) as soon as you have paid the obligatory Students’ Union fee.

In this status you may only take the examinations at the VWU, examinations for the degree programme cannot be taken yet.

The admission to the degree programme is only possible once you have passed all supplementary examinations and have participated successfully in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment.

You have to complete all prescribed supplementary examinations and the personal enrolment until 5 February in the following year. If you do not finish the Preparation Programme in time, you have to re-take the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment in the following academic year.

Option 2:

You were successful in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment and no supplementary examinations are prescribed in your acceptance letter.

Please go to the Admission Office (opening hours) during the admission period of your degree programme. Bring the above listed documents in their orignal version or as notarised copies.

As your identity has to be verified, you have to complete the admission procedure personally at the Admission Office. Representation by third parties is not possible!

Step 6: Payment of the tuition fee/Students' Union fee

You may pay with your ATM or credit card (only Visa or Mastercard) when completing the admission procedure at the Admission Office.

You are admitted as soon as the prescribed tuition fee/Students' Union fee is registered as "received on" in u:space.

What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as "received on" in u:space (Financial matters > Tuition fee/Students' Union fee), you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) by clicking on Personal Matters > My Documents. You can also order your student ID card, the u:card.

Once you are enrolled as a degree student, you can plan your semester and register for courses. The respective course registration periods can be found in u:find and u:space.
