Application with a secondary-school leaving certificate and citizenship from a non-EU/EEA country with little proficiency in German

Your secondary-school leaving certificate and your citizenship are from a non-EU/EEA country, you want to study a bachelor/diploma programme with an entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment but your German knowledge is below B2 level?

You cannot participate in the entrance exam procedure yet, but you can apply for a degree programme and then attend a German course. Please read the information about German proficiency carefully!

Due to amendments to the Universities Act, applicants have to include a proof of German knowledge at level A2 in their applications for degree programmes instructed in German from summer semester 2019 onwards, even if they would like to participate in the University Preparation Programme. For the admission to degree programmes a proof of German knowledge at level C1 is required.

Accepted proofs of German knowledge A2

Your steps in the admission procedure

Step 1: Online Self-Assessment

As a first step in the entrance exam procedure, complete the Online Self-Assessment within the registration period. After completion, you will receive your OSA code. If you have it sent to you via e-mail, this code will be centrally stored.

You have to complete the Online Self-Assessment even if you lack sufficient German knowledge.

There is no OSA for the bachelor programmes Psychology and Sport Science.

Step 2: Preparation of required documents

Prepare all required documents in the adequate format before the registration period starts. Scan the documents and create PDF files. Use an online tool of your choice to merge various pages of one document into one PDF file (f.e. secondary-school leaving certificate + legalisation + translation; special university entrance qualification + translation, etc.). All your files have to be easily readable. Please check the quality of your files before uploading them.

Step 3: Application for admission in u:space

  1. Activate your u:account in u:space within the registration period. You will need this account during your studies at the University of Vienna.
  2. Log in to u:space, complete the registration and select the degree programme of your choice. Upload the required documents. Select "No, my German knowledge is not sufficient. I want to attend a German course of the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU)".
  3. Enter the OSA code.
  4. Select "continue to submission", check if the data you provided (especially your e-mail address) is correct and then click on "submit application".

Once the status of your application in u:space below "My applications" is "submitted", the Admission Office will process your application.

Missing documents will cause a delay in processing your application! Submit your application only after you have uploaded all required documents.

Step 4: Wait for your admission letter

The Admission Office needs various weeks to process your application. For administrative reasons it is not possible to inform you about the status of your application.

Your admission letter will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in u:space.

Step 5: Registration at the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU)

Together with your admission letter you receive information about the next steps in the admission procedure. Your admission letter also specifies if you have to pass supplementary exams, apart from Germen, such as Mathematics, Elish or Geography/History in the Preparation Programme (VWU) before starting with your degree programme (cooperation partners, costs, deadlines).

Step 6: Personal admission

After having registered at the VWU, go to the Admission Office (opening hours) and present the registration confirmation and the required documents in their original version or as notarised copies during the admission period to complete the admission procedure.

As your identity has to be verified, you have to complete the admission procedure personally. Representation by third parties is not possible!

Step 7: Payment of the Students´Union fee

You may pay via ATM or credit card (only Visa or Mastercard) when completing the admission procedure at the Admission Office.

You will be admitted as a non-degree student as soon as the prescribed fee is registered as "received on" in u:space. This means that you cannot start with your degree programme yet, you can only participate in courses and exams at the VWU.

What comes next?

As soon as your fee is registered as "received on" in u:space (Financial matters > Tuition fee/Students' Union fee), you can print your student documents (i.e. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolment) by clicking on Personal Matters > My Documents. You can also order your student ID card, the u:card.

Registration for the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment

Do not forget to register for the entrance exam procedureaptitude assessment via u:space in the following registration period as soon as you have reached level B2 or C1 in German!

Admission to the degree programme is only possible, if you have passed the supplementary exam in German and have successfully participated in the entrance exam procedure/aptitude assessment.
