Genetics and Developmental Biology (Master)

The master’s programme in Genetics and Developmental Biology aims at providing students with profound knowledge of either genetics and molecular pathology, or cell biology and developmental biology, depending on the selected modules and alternative group of compulsory modules. Graduates of the master’s programme are qualified to independently deal with complex molecular and genetic issues, using state-of-the-art large-scale equipment. In addition, they have acquired all the necessary competences to conduct research in an international research environment. Classes are held in German and English.

Topics covered in the master’s programme include (among others): transmission genetics; mitosis; meiosis; chromosome biology; epigenetics on the level of DNA and proteins; molecular biology of the RNA; cellular machines; ion transport; behavioural genetics in drosophila; tumour genetics; molecular pathology; forward and reverse genetics in mammals, fish, drosophila and tetrahymena; yeast genetics; bioinformatics; methods in forward and reverse genetics; RNAi and small RNAs; functional genome research, including DNA chip technology; developmental genetics in Arabidopsis thaliana, drosophila melanogaster and mice; yeast sporulation; development of nerves; development of the skeleton; stem cells and cell polarity; reprogramming; in vitro differentiation of vertebrate cells; haematopoiesis, in vitro regeneration of plant cells; plant biotechnology; signal transduction in stress and development; development of gametes; cell cycle; cell differentiation and cell movement; cytoskeleton, biogenesis of peroxisomes.
